Security Services Award penalty rate multipliers

Multipliers apply to your OWN base hourly rate (find it on the Fair Work pay guide for your classification) — they are not full wage tables.

Rate type Full-time / part-time Casual
Saturday 150% 175%
Sunday 200% 225%
Public holiday 250% 275%
Night span (Mon–Fri, non-permanent) 121.7% 146.7%
Permanent night work (Mon–Fri) 130% 155%
Overtime — Mon–Fri, first 2 hours 150% 150%
Overtime — Mon–Fri, after 2 hours 200% 200%
Overtime — Sunday 200% 200%
Overtime — public holiday 250% 250%

Casual loading is not paid on top of overtime rates — casual overtime equals the full-time/part-time overtime rate (same structure as the Hospitality and Restaurant awards). Saturday, Sunday, public holiday and shift loadings DO get the standard 25-percentage-point casual addition.

The night span figure (121.7%) is the award's own tabulated rate — it doesn't reduce to a round percentage, unlike this award's other loadings.

Casual loading interaction

Casual employees under the Security Services Award get a 25% casual loading on their base hourly rate, in exchange for not receiving paid annual leave, personal/carer's leave or notice of termination. That loading generally stacks additively on top of weekend and public holiday penalties — e.g. a Sunday penalty of 200% for full-time staff becomes 225% for casuals under this award.

Check the notes in the table above — some awards (Hospitality, Restaurant) pay casuals the SAME overtime rate as full-time/part-time staff, with no extra casual loading stacked on overtime specifically.

FAQ
What are the penalty rates under the Security Services Industry Award 2020?
Under the Security Services Award [MA000016], full-time and part-time employees are paid 200% on Sunday and 250% on public holidays, on top of their ordinary base rate. Casual employees get a further loading on top of these figures. Rates are effective from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026.
Do casual employees get penalty rates on top of the 25% casual loading?
Yes for weekend and public holiday work — the 25% casual loading and the applicable penalty both apply. The exception is overtime under the Security Services Award, where casual employees are paid the same overtime rate as full-time/part-time employees, with no extra casual loading stacked on top.
Is this my exact pay rate?
This page applies the Security Services Award's PERCENTAGE multipliers to an illustrative base rate — it does not look up your specific classification's minimum dollar rate. What if I work on a public holiday that falls on my usual day off?
Public holiday entitlements and substitution rules can be complex — check the full list of gazetted public holidays for your state and the award's specific public holiday clauses on the Fair Work public holidays page.
