This award's general staff classification covers school support roles — admin, IT, grounds, library, laboratory and health/learning-support assistants. School operational services employees in cooking, catering and non-averaged-hours boarding supervision have their own lower Saturday/Sunday rates under this award, not modelled here; nursing services employees have a separate combined Saturday-and-Sunday overtime rate, also not modelled here.

Casual loading stacks additively on every row in this award, including overtime — casual = full-time rate + 25 percentage points throughout.

Boarding supervision employees whose hours are averaged over a 12-month period are not entitled to shift loadings, penalty rates or overtime under this award — not modelled here.

Casual loading interaction

Casual employees under the Educational Services Award get a 25% casual loading on their base hourly rate, in exchange for not receiving paid annual leave, personal/carer's leave or notice of termination. That loading generally stacks additively on top of weekend and public holiday penalties — e.g. a Sunday penalty of 200% for full-time staff becomes 225% for casuals under this award.

Check the notes in the table above — some awards (Hospitality, Restaurant) pay casuals the SAME overtime rate as full-time/part-time staff, with no extra casual loading stacked on overtime specifically.

FAQ
What are the penalty rates under the Educational Services (Schools) General Staff Award?
Under the Educational Services Award [MA000076], full-time and part-time employees are paid 200% on Sunday and 250% on public holidays, on top of their ordinary base rate. Casual employees get a further loading on top of these figures. Rates are effective from the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026.
Do casual employees get penalty rates on top of the 25% casual loading?
Yes — under the Educational Services Award, the 25% casual loading and the applicable penalty rate (Saturday, Sunday, public holiday, shift loading or overtime) both apply on top of the base rate.
Is this my exact pay rate?
This page applies the Educational Services Award's PERCENTAGE multipliers to an illustrative base rate — it does not look up your specific classification's minimum dollar rate. Confirm your classification and base rate on the Fair Work pay guide for this award, then use the penalty rates calculator to apply these multipliers to your own rate.
What if I work on a public holiday that falls on my usual day off?
Public holiday entitlements and substitution rules can be complex — check the full list of gazetted public holidays for your state and the award's specific public holiday clauses on the Fair Work public holidays page.
