Removing the loading

Hold 10 continuous years of hospital cover and any loading is removed, no matter how high it was. You get up to 1,094 lifetime "permitted days without cover" — about 3 years — for insurer switches or short breaks without the loading increasing or the 10-year clock resetting.

Frequently asked questions

How is Lifetime Health Cover loading calculated by age?
Loading is 2% of your hospital premium for every year you are aged over 30 on the 1 July before you first take out cover, capped at 70%. Age 31 is the first age that carries any loading (2%); the 70% cap is reached at age 65.
Why isn't the loading based on years since I turned 31?
Turning 31 (specifically, the 1 July following your 31st birthday) sets the deadline to join hospital cover without any loading at all — your "LHC base day". Once you miss that day, the loading itself is worked out from age 30, not from 31.
How long do I pay the loading for?
Loading is removed after 10 continuous years of hospital cover, regardless of how high it was or the age you joined at.
Can I have any gaps in cover without the loading increasing?
Yes — up to 1,094 lifetime "Days of Absence" (just under 3 years) for insurer switches or short breaks. Longer gaps add a further 2% for every year beyond that.

This page estimates LHC loading using the standard 2% per year over age 30 rule and a 10-year continuous cover period. It is a planning guide, not insurer-specific pricing advice.
