LHC Loading at Age 58

Joining hospital cover for the first time at age 58 adds a 56% Lifetime Health Cover loading to your premium — 2% for every year you are aged over 30 when you join, capped at 70%.

Annual hospital premium (before loading)Loading (56%)Total premium
$1,800.00$1,008.00$2,808.00
$3,000.00$1,680.00$4,680.00
$4,800.00$2,688.00$7,488.00

The rebate does not apply to the loading component, so the loading amount shown here is on top of whatever rebate reduces the base premium.

Why age 58 lands on 56%

Lifetime Health Cover loading is 2% of your hospital premium for every year you are aged over 30 on the 1 July before you take out cover — not years since your 31st birthday. At age 58, that is 28 years over 30, giving 56%.

The 31st-birthday rule still matters — it sets your "LHC base day" (the 1 July following your 31st birthday), which is the deadline to hold hospital cover without any loading at all. Missing that day is what makes the age-30 formula apply once you do join.

Removing the loading

Hold 10 continuous years of hospital cover from age 58 and the loading is removed — it does not matter how high the loading was. You can still take up to 1,094 lifetime "permitted days without cover" (about 3 years) for insurer switches or short breaks without the loading increasing or the 10-year clock resetting.

Frequently asked questions

How much is LHC loading if I join hospital cover at age 58?
Joining at age 58 adds a 56% loading — 2% for each of the 28 years you are aged over 30. On a $1,800.00 hospital premium, that is an extra $1,008.00 a year.
When does LHC loading stop if I join at 58?
Loading is removed once you have held 10 continuous years of hospital cover, regardless of the age you joined at. Starting cover at 58 means the loading falls away after 10 years of unbroken hospital cover (short gaps are allowed — see permitted days below).
How many days can I go without hospital cover before the loading increases?
You get 1,094 lifetime "Days of Absence" (just under 3 years) to switch insurers or take a break without adding loading. Exceeding this adds a further 2% for every year beyond it.
Does the private health insurance rebate reduce the loading at age 58?
No. The government rebate applies only to the base hospital premium, not to the LHC loading component — so the loading is paid in full even if you are otherwise fully rebated.
Is the loading based on years since I turned 31, or years over 30?
Years over 30. Age 31 already carries a 2% loading — the 31st-birthday date only sets the deadline (LHC "base day") to join without any loading at all. Once you miss that day, the loading itself is calculated from age 30, not from 31.
