Frequently asked questions

How does the private health insurance rebate change with income?
The rebate steps down through 4 tiers as income rises — base, tier 1, tier 2 and tier 3 (0%) — using the same income thresholds as the Medicare Levy Surcharge. For 2026-27, the single base tier applies at $105,000 or below.
Does the rebate depend on age as well as income?
Yes. Within each income tier, the rebate rate is higher for the 65-69 age band and higher again for 70 and over, based on the oldest person on the policy.
Are the family thresholds the same as the single thresholds?
No — family thresholds are roughly double the single ones, and increase by $1,500 for each dependent child after the first. A combined family income can sit in a lower tier than the same figure would as a single income.
What happens if my income exceeds the top tier?
Above the tier 3 threshold, the private health insurance rebate is 0% regardless of age — but holding hospital cover still avoids the Medicare Levy Surcharge, which uses the same threshold structure.
