Frequently asked questions

How many nights equal 35% care for Family Tax Benefit?
In a standard 365-night care period, 128 nights reaches the 35% care threshold. Below 35%, child-related FTB is generally not payable to that carer.
Is the FTB shared care percentage the same as the care percentage?
Not always. For example, 40% care maps to a 35% FTB shared care percentage. Care between 48% and 52% maps to a 50% FTB share.
Can I receive anything with less than 35% care?
A person with 14% to less than 35% care is not eligible for child-related FTB, but may qualify for the Rent Assistance component and some other government benefits if the other conditions are met.
Does Services Australia always use nights?
Nights are commonly used, but Services Australia may consider hours or other evidence when overnight care does not fairly represent the actual care arrangement.
