FAQ
How many fortnights are in a year?
A standard payroll year uses 26 fortnights because 26 × 14 days equals 364 days. Depending on the payroll anchor date, either a calendar year or an Australian financial year can contain 27 fortnightly paydays.
How can I tell if I have 27 fortnightly pays?
Choose calendar year or financial year, then enter any confirmed payday in that period. The calculator moves backwards and forwards in exact 14-day steps and counts every payday within the selected year.
Does a 27th pay mean I am taxed at a different rate?
No. The extra payday does not create a special tax rate. It can, however, affect whether ordinary fortnightly PAYG withholding is enough across the whole year.
Should annual salary always be fortnightly pay multiplied by 26?
Multiplying by 26 is the standard annualisation convention. If the actual payroll cycle contains 27 paydays, cash received in that calendar year can be one fortnightly gross payment higher.
