Youth Allowance Eligibility Australia 2026
Screen the five main student and apprentice rules before starting a Services Australia claim.
Age and pathway
Usually 18–24 and studying full time, or 16–24 in a full-time Australian Apprenticeship. Limited under-18 pathways and continuation after 24 can apply.
Study or apprenticeship
Your course, provider, study load and progress must satisfy the approved-study rules, or you must be in a full-time Australian Apprenticeship.
Residence
You must meet Australian residence rules and any newly arrived resident waiting period that applies to you.
Dependent or independent
Services Australia generally treats you as independent from age 22, but relationship, work-history, family and special-circumstance tests can change this.
Means tests
Personal income always matters. Parental income can apply if dependent; partner income and assets can apply when independent.
This is a screening guide, not a formal decision. Start with the student payment finder, then use the payment calculator if Youth Allowance is the likely pathway.
