Registration is a recurring cost. Buying or transferring a car also triggers motor vehicle duty, which the vehicle stamp duty calculator works out for each state.
Frequently asked questions
How much is rego in NSW?
NSW registration is a $84 annual registration fee plus vehicle tax set by the vehicle's tare weight. A private car with a tare weight up to 970 kg pays $278 in vehicle tax. A one-off $100 discount applies to privately registered light motor vehicles with a renewal date from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027. CTP (green slip) is bought from an insurer and is not included.
How much is rego in Queensland?
For a private 4-cylinder car, Queensland registration is $385.45 plus a $67.25 traffic improvement fee, plus CTP insurance of $411.80 to $427.80 depending on the insurer (fees as at 1 October 2026). Registration rises with the number of cylinders.
How much is rego in Victoria?
VicRoads lists an annual renewal fee including the TAC charge of $958.80 for a sedan, wagon, hatch or SUV in the metropolitan (high risk) zone, $897.10 in the outer metropolitan zone and $824.60 in rural areas. First registration also needs motor vehicle duty and a number plate fee.
How much is rego in South Australia?
For a 4 cylinder sedan or station wagon, the South Australian Government's approximate 12-month fee from 1 July 2026 is $705 in the metropolitan area and $585 in the country. The figure includes a CTP insurance estimate and the level 1 administration fee.
Why does my renewal notice show a different amount?
The calculator uses the published fee tables. Your notice can differ because of the CTP insurer you choose, concessions, the registration period, or fees that changed after the table was published. Treat the result as an estimate and check the notice for the amount payable.
Is Western Australia included?
Not yet. Western Australia's licence fee depends on weight and its insurance premium comes from a separate scheme, so it is not on this calculator.
